Taught Programme

We embed our innovative taught programme into your doctoral research scholarship, preparing you for a career in the offshore wind industry.

We ensure our training programme stays relevant to the offshore wind industry, through constant review by our Training Working Group Led by Project Co-Lead Dr Stuart McLelland, and with input from the Stakeholder Advisory Board which includes industry partners as well as Government/Non-Government Organisations working in the offshore wind sector.

The taught element of the training programme is delivered in two phases:

Phase 1: Intensive induction to Offshore Wind

An intensive training programme, delivered at the University of Hull alongside other members of your cohort during months 1-6.

Phase 1 delivers cross-disciplinary subject knowledge. We provide you with the background you need to ground your research within offshore wind’s real-world challenges. On completing this initial training, you will then start full-time study on your selected PhD project.

90 credits delivered via 5 Modules:

M1 Offshore Wind Energy

M2 The Modern Researcher: Essential Skills, Knowledge and Training

M3 Environmental Issues in Offshore Wind

M4 Outreach and Engagement 

M5 Cutting-edge Concepts

Phase 2: Modules studied at partner universities

Phase 2 tuition continues alongside your focused research. During months 7-24 you will undertake and additional 3 modules delivered at the University of Durham, Loughborough University and the University of Sheffield.

We help you keep abreast of current developments across engineering, economic sustainability and environmental resilience, readying you for your future career and developing a broader range of expertise. 

30 credits delivered via 3 Modules:

M5 Renewable Energy Economics at Loughborough University

M6 Energy Engineering at University of Durham

M7 Materials and Manufacturing at University of Sheffield

Student support

Your progress across each of the taught modules will be monitored by regular, individual meetings with CDT Director and Programme Tutor, Professor Jim Gilbert and your PhD research will be supported by your supervisory team. Students actively contribute to developing and improving the CDT experience through participation in regular student forum meetings and student representation in CDT management.

We strive to make our programme delivery inclusive to all students, with active support for Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Well-being for everyone in the CDT programme. 

Continuing professional development (CPD) is embedded throughout your PhD, across the four partner universities, to maintain the collaborative cohort ethos with activities including our annual Aura CDT Conference and our annual Aura CDT Residential. Both events provide continued industry stakeholder engagement, career development and CPD plus interdisciplinary and inter cohort interaction and peer to peer learning.
