Alanna Kirwan Lambe

EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Offshore Wind Energy Sustainability and Resilience

Cohort 2 student

Alanna Kirwan Lambe

Background:

I completed my undergraduate degree in Applied Freshwater and Marine Biology at GMIT in Galway, where I developed a strong foundation in marine and freshwater ecology. I then earned an MSc in Applied Marine Conservation at ATU, with research focused on biogenic habitats and benthic community structure. I also gained hands-on experience working on the EPA SAMFHIRES research project in collaboration with Trinity College Dublin examining the effect of eutrophication on salt marshes. Beyond research, I have worked in science engagement as Visitor Engagement Officer at Galway Atlantaquaria and contributed to youth environmental initiatives, including serving as a panellist judge for UNESCO Ecodens.

Research Interests:

As a benthic ecologist, I am particularly interested in how human activities alter the structure and function of seafloor communities. I am passionate about understanding ecological change in coastal and offshore systems, especially as the marine environment faces unprecedented development pressures. Through my doctoral research, I aim to investigate how offshore wind infrastructure influences benthic ecosystems and how this knowledge can support evidence-based environmental management. I am especially motivated by opportunities to contribute to Marine Net Gain policy and to ensure that renewable energy expansion aligns with conservation priorities.

Why you applied for the Aura CDT:

The Aura CDT offers an inspiring interdisciplinary environment that brings together researchers, industry partners, and expert practitioners working toward sustainable offshore wind development. I wanted to join a community where collaboration and integrated training are central to achieving real-world impact. The programme provides a unique platform to grow as a researcher while contributing to cutting-edge solutions that balance renewable energy development with marine ecosystem protection.

My PhD Research:

Understanding the effects of offshore wind development on marine benthic communities
