Bayan Mohammad
Background:
I am a civil and structural engineer with a BEng degree from Bradford University and an MSc from UCL. After spending four academic years learning and exploring a variety of civil and structural engineering modules, I was very lucky to join the offshore industry.
I worked for three years as a structural engineer with Heerema Marine Contractors, executing projects globally ranging from installation and decommissioning of offshore Oil, Gas, and Wind structures. I then joined Red7Marine for two years as a lead engineer with, structural, geotechnical, and maritime responsibilities. These were on different nearshore and offshore projects which involved the use of Jack up barges.
Having equipped myself with good experience and knowledge in the offshore industry, I felt excited to join and contribute to the offshore wind industry.
Research Interests:
I will be researching the decommissioning of offshore foundation systems with great focus on the offshore wind monopiles. The removal of such large piles is considered challenging and not feasible form an economical and carbon emission perspective. I will be exploring past and ongoing research and aim to deliver a solution for the removal of such large monopiles.
The research will consider theoretical and practical approaches to minimising the cost and carbon footprint of the decommissioning stage of a wind farm life cycle. Although the research will tailor solutions for current designs of monopiles, I will be aiming to research design suggestions that could facilitate decommissioning of future monopile designs.
Why you applied for the Aura CDT:
Over the past years, I have been looking for research topics that were within my field of theoretical and practical experience and were not purely theoretical. The Aura CDT did provide a unique research topic that tailored ongoing industrial challenges that matched my interest. Additionally, and as part of the research journey, the centre will unlock the collaboration between different universities with access and support from the wide thriving industry.
My PhD Research:
Innovative Decommissioning for Offshore Foundation Systems
