Zach Wang
Aura CDT activities:
I am currently a Cohort 2.1 Student Rep on the Aura CDT Student Committee.
Background:
I hold a bachelor’s degree in Geography, from University of Calgary, Canada and a master’s degree in Pollution and Environmental Control with distinction from the University of Manchester. During my postgraduate studies, I developed a tool that use artificial intelligence and/machine learning (ML) techniques to analyse the historical water level data of the Medlock River in Manchester, with the aim of enhancing the accuracy and reliability of flood forecasting models in the region under the impact of climate change.
Having worked on oil & gas and renewable energy projects across Canada and UK, I possess a global outlook and cultural sensitivity invaluable for navigating complex international dynamics. I also have a strong background in data analysis and have effectively generated insights from data sets to inform data-driven operational and strategic decision-making. Additionally, I possess proficiency in data visualization tools such as PowerBI, Tableau, and RStudio, along with familiarity in programming languages including R, JavaScript, and PHP.
Research Interests:
My research interests lie at the intersection of Renewable Energy and Economics, with a particular focus on Energy Security in the UK. My proficiency in data analysis, modelling, and quantitative methods equips me with the ability to conduct rigorous empirical analyses, an important aspect of investigating offshore wind integration and energy security implications.
Why you applied for the Aura CDT:
I was drawn to the Aura CDT because of its commitment to fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation. With my multidisciplinary background, international exposure, and commitment to continuous learning, I can make a tangible impact on society.
My PhD Research:
Energy security vs energy import costs: assessing the role of Offshore Wind Power
